Join us for this four-hour workshop with Mallory Zondag where you will learn and explore the ancient and awesome art of wet felting to create your own unique felted bowl. During the workshop you will learn how to work with wool roving, water and soap to create felt from scratch and how to sculpt it using wooden bowl forms, hand turned on a lathe in the Studio. We will also have hand-dyed wool from our local Charlton sheep farms that can be woven into your design. Your felted bowl can be a unique and special gift, or brighten your own home.

This three-dimensional wet felting process that you will learn during the workshop can also be applied to making vases, baskets, slippers and more! We can’t wait to continue expanding our material knowledge of this process and seeing what everyone creates!

Learn the sculptural and stress relieving technique of needle felting while celebrating the little things that make our shared traditions so special… ornaments!

Whether your ornaments hang on a “Charlie Brown Tree” like ours, or dangle around your doorways and dining room chandeliers, ornaments are one of the reasons we love winter! 

Fiber artist, Mallory Zondag, will show us how to create bold pattern and swirling colors using some of the Studio's hand-dyed local sheep wool! We'll start with a recycled foam form and layer on thin layers of wool to sculp a lovel little ornament to brighten your own space, or give as a special gift. 

We’ll have an opportunity to talk about sourcing and processing wool, natural dyeing, and the role felting can play in contemporary artists’ work. This will be a fun class with lots of room for creativity, experimentation and good conversations! There are two session times to pick from, an afterschool time and a later evening time. We hope you can make one of the classes! 

Create your own custom wool felted slippers during this full day felting workshop with the ancient process of wet felting. We will be working with wool roving, water, soap and use the power of our own two hands to transform the wool fibers into sculpted, wearable slippers. You will learn the process of the wet felting, three dimensional wet felting and the process of felting over premade forms. This workshop will include some work that needs to be done before and after the workshop on the student's own time. You will receive instructions on how to create a last from recycled materials, a last is a shoe form that will be custom molded to your feet so your slippers will fit you perfectly. After the workshop when your slippers are perfectly dry, you will be able to add a sole to your slippers if desired. Those instructions and materials will be given to you at the workshop along with a demonstration so you can complete that task at your convenience. Get ready for winter by creating the coziest, handmade slippers to keep you warm and learn an ancient skill in the process! The fee for the workshop includes all materials. There is a minimum number of participants for the workshop to run, so preregistration is required.

Create a sweet pet ornament using wool, wire and felting needles during this needle felting workshop. We will work with wool roving to sculpt a wooly version of a pet or favorite animal to hang in your home or give as a gift. You will learn how to sculpt with wool, how to blend colors to create realistic details and create different textures to bring your animal ornament to life. All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary to participate. Learn how to paint with wool fibers during this three hour felted

painting workshop. Students will learn how to create an image using

only wool fibers and a felting needle on 5"x7" piece of wool felt. We

will cover painting techniques such as color theory, atmospheric

perspective, light and shadow and more! Everyone will create their

own unique and woolly image by the end of class.

Learn how to sculpt with wool through the art of needle felting. Students will gain skills in shaping and sculpting wool with the felting tools, blending colors, and creating facial features and other forms such as wings and ears. Animal design can range from realistic to animated. All materials are provided and no experience is necessary. Materials fee: $10

Students will learn how to apply wool roving, silk fibers, mixed fabrics and other materials to a piece of silk chiffon and through the art of wet felting, fuse them all together into a cohesive and dimensional textile wall hanging. We will discuss composition, color theory, playing with texture and pattern and you will learn the process of creating felted fabric from scratch!

You will learn a variety of embroidery stitches that can be used to create everything from stems and leaves to hydrangeas, roses, daisies, and even fringe moss. Students will leave with a 6” hoop, assorted embroidery threads, and embroidery needles. Materials fee: $10.

Wooly monsters, just in time for Halloween! 

Squishy bodies, toothy grins and lots of eyeballs! 

Mallory Zondag, contemporary textile artist, will show us how to create your own squishy creature made entirely of wool using both wet felting and needle felting techniques. Using the ancient art of wet felting, a technique where wool is combined with hot water, olive oil soap and is then agitated, you will create a three dimensional wooly creature body. You will also learn how to needle felt to create further detail on your monsters like toothy grins and lots of eyeballs to bring your little creatures to life!  There will be plenty of materials to use, including hand-dyed wool sourced from our local Charlton sheep farms. 

Your monster can be cute or creepy, but don’t let these silly little guys fool you, Mallory has a wealth of knowledge to share on both wet and needle felting techniques. If you are new to felting, this is a great intro. If you have some experience and want to learn some new tricks, Mallory is a great resource. Wet felting has so many other applications, besides silly monsters! This technique could also be used to create hats, slippers, sculptural forms and really anything you can imagine…we love having Mallory in the Studio with us.

Learn the ancient and awesome art of wet felting during this full day workshop to create your own unique flowers from scratch. You will learn a multitude of wet felting techniques and sculptural felting techniques during this workshop, along with techniques for stitching your felt, before and after the flowers are felted. We will cover three different processes for create felted flowers and at the end of the class you will be able to felt your very own design.

Create your own large wooly pumpkin to make a unique addition to your home this fall in this 5 hour workshop.

Using silk, merino wool roving and sari silk waste among other textured fibers, each student will learn the art of creating textured nuno felted fabric. We will use stitching and recycled fibers to turn the nuno felt into a formed pumpkin and use needle felting to shape the pumpkin and create a whimsical stem! Explore the art of wet felting and needle felting through this pumpkin project.

Make some fiber fungi at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library! Learn how to sculpt with wool through needle felting during this fun workshop! Using wool roving, wire armature, and felting needles, you will learn how to shape wool into small sculpted mushrooms. 

This three hour workshop led by Mallory Zondag will teach you needle felting techniques, including how to blend colors and create realistic details to bring your wooly mushroom to life.

Evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor by learning to weave  patterns and textures into a hanging tapestry. Learn how to warp a frame loom, finish off your weaving, and four different texture techniques to bring your moss textile to life! This 4.5-hour workshop celebrates the summer exhibition, American Landscapes From The New York Historical Society, and includes admission to explore the show.

Using a frame loom and a variety of yarns and fibers such as wool roving and wool locks, you will learn how to weave patterns and textures to evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor. The workshop will cover four different weaving techniques to bring your moss textile to life!

To continue with our "Farm and Art" collaborations, the subject matter for this workshop will feature a floral still life created by Marlee Imbarrato, owner of Fleur Flower Farm, or you can choose to work from one of Marlee’s photos of her beautiful flower farm. You could even bring your own photo to base your felted painting on if you have something special that inspires you!

Using the ancient art of wet felting, a technique where wool is combined with hot water, olive oil soap and is then agitated, you will create a three dimensional wooly bird house! This technique, once learned, can be applied to the creation of hats, slippers and more. Felted wool has natural water proof qualities, retains heat and has been used by humans for over thousands of years to create dwellings called yurts and we can apply these techniques to create uniquely formed birdhouses. 

You will learn how to wet felt hollow three dimensional forms and how to embellish those forms through needle felting. This technique once learned can be applied to making hats, shoes, bowls and more!
