Felted Slippers @ SUNY SCC

Create your own custom wool felted slippers during this two-night felting workshop with the ancient process of wet felting. We will be working with wool roving, water, soap and use the power of our own two hands to transform the wool fibers into sculpted, wearable slippers. You will learn the process of the wet felting, three-dimensional wet felting and the process of felting over premade forms. This workshop will include some work that needs to be done before and after the workshop on the student's own time. You will receive instructions on how to create a last from recycled materials. (A last is a shoe form that will be custom molded to your feet so your slippers will fit you perfectly.) After the workshop when your slippers are perfectly dry, you will be able to add a sole to your slippers if desired. Those instructions and materials will be given to you at the workshop along with a demonstration so you can complete that task at your convenience. Get ready for winter by creating the coziest, handmade slippers to keep you warm and learn an ancient skill in the process!

Join us for this four-hour workshop with Mallory Zondag where you will learn and explore the ancient and awesome art of wet felting to create your own unique felted bowl. During the workshop you will learn how to work with wool roving, water and soap to create felt from scratch and how to sculpt it using wooden bowl forms, hand turned on a lathe in the Studio. We will also have hand-dyed wool from our local Charlton sheep farms that can be woven into your design. Your felted bowl can be a unique and special gift, or brighten your own home.

Learn the sculptural and stress relieving technique of needle felting while celebrating the little things that make our shared traditions so special… ornaments!

Whether your ornaments hang on a “Charlie Brown Tree” like ours, or dangle around your doorways and dining room chandeliers, ornaments are one of the reasons we love winter! 

Fiber artist, Mallory Zondag, will show us how to create bold pattern and swirling colors using some of the Studio's hand-dyed local sheep wool! We'll start with a recycled foam form and layer on thin layers of wool to sculp a lovel little ornament to brighten your own space, or give as a special gift. 

We’ll have an opportunity to talk about sourcing and processing wool, natural dyeing, and the role felting can play in contemporary artists’ work. This will be a fun class with lots of room for creativity, experimentation and good conversations! There are two session times to pick from, an afterschool time and a later evening time. We hope you can make one of the classes!

Wooly monsters, just in time for Halloween! 

Squishy bodies, toothy grins and lots of eyeballs! 

Mallory Zondag, contemporary textile artist, will show us how to create your own squishy creature made entirely of wool using both wet felting and needle felting techniques. Using the ancient art of wet felting, a technique where wool is combined with hot water, olive oil soap and is then agitated, you will create a three dimensional wooly creature body. You will also learn how to needle felt to create further detail on your monsters like toothy grins and lots of eyeballs to bring your little creatures to life!  There will be plenty of materials to use, including hand-dyed wool sourced from our local Charlton sheep farms. 

Your monster can be cute or creepy, but don’t let these silly little guys fool you, Mallory has a wealth of knowledge to share on both wet and needle felting techniques. If you are new to felting, this is a great intro. If you have some experience and want to learn some new tricks, Mallory is a great resource. Wet felting has so many other applications, besides silly monsters! This technique could also be used to create hats, slippers, sculptural forms and really anything you can imagine…we love having Mallory in the Studio with us.

Learn the art of sculptural wet felting and needle felting during this one day intensive to create your own unique wooly bird house! 

Felted wool has natural water proof qualities, retains heat and has been used by humans for over thousands of years to create dwellings called yurts and we can apply these techniques to create uniquely formed birdhouses. 

You will learn how to wet felt hollow three dimensional forms and how to embellish those forms through needle felting. This technique once learned can be applied to making hats, shoes, bowls and more!
